NAESM MEN’S HEALTH AND WELLNESS CENTER IS NOW THE CARL BEAN MEN’S HEALTH AND WELLNESS CENTER

ATLANTA, GEORGIA – The Board of Directors of NAESM Men’s Health and Wellness Center has announced its name change to the Carl Bean Men’s Health and Wellness Center effective November 1, 2021.

The Board of Directors made the decision to change the name of the clinic in recognition of the life-saving work in HIV/AIDS by Archbishop Carl Bean. Archbishop Carl Bean, deceased, was a pioneer AIDS activist, an innovator in the LBGTQ church movement, and an international advocate for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer persons. He is credited for starting Unity Fellowship Church of Christ in 1982 and the Minority AIDS Project in 1985. As one of the first Black gay gospel singers to sign with Motown, he recorded his number one dance single, “I Was Born This Way,” in 1977.

Archbishop Carl Bean represented inclusion and he strived throughout his life to show love, care, and respect to all, specifically those in the LGBTQ community. His work to lessen the health disparities as well as to advocate and provide access to healthcare in the AIDS epidemic is legendary and iconic.

“Archbishop Carl Bean’s name and his work are consistent with the Men’s Health and Wellness Center mission to reduce health disparities in the Black gay, bisexual and transgender community by providing high quality medical service,” shared President and Board Chair, Rudolph Carn.
